Backroom Wheeling And Dealing

The back rooms in DC may be clear of cigar smoke, but the deals being made in them still stink to high heaven:
Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Pat Toomey, R-Pa., could nail down an accord early this week, said the aides, who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the private talks.
The ‘accord’ Mr. Preston mentions is gun control, and this is just the latest in the series of back-room, hidden-from-public-view, secret, evil-prefers-darkness crap we’ve had to deal with with politicians forever and anon.

Mr. Preston makes the perfect point:
Substantively, when Republicans and Democrats get together in back room deals like this one, they not only violate the idea of open government, they end up getting railroaded by the Democrats.
As a conservative, Toomey’s attachment to any measure weakens the hands of other conservatives and moderate Democrats who may otherwise steer clear of passing any gun control bill.
How often do our Republican elite have to do their little deals and get their collective a$$es handed to them before they learn this kind of crap doesn’t work?  Debt ceiling, taxes, sequester…all of them dealt with through backroom wheeling and dealing and they lost.

Representative Republican government?

As the English say, pull the other one, fellas – it’s got bells on it.
