Not Surprising at All

Over at The Blaze, Billy Hallowell finds the linking of Dan Savage with the new ‘Christian’ group Not All Like That (NALT) surprising.

I don’t.

Consider: Dan Savage is a proudly-homosexual, foul-mouthed, anti-Christian bigot.  What do you think would make this guy’s day?  How about joining hands with a self-professing ‘Christian’ group which has as its mission ‘giving “LGBT-affirming Christians a means of proclaiming to the world” that there’s nothing sinful about being gay, lesbian, bi-sexual or transgender’ by ‘claim[ing] ‘that there’s nothing in the Bible that would contradict or condemn a homosexual lifestyle’?  How about having that same group focusing its anti-biblical message on ‘young people, in particular, with its message urging for inclusion and a new view on biblical texts’?

How about using such a group to infiltrate the Christian church in an attempt to fragment and – perhaps – even destroy it?

Well, NALT’s all that and a bag of chips.

NALT isn’t professing anything new – the whole ‘the Bible doesn’t really condemn homosexuality’ with its basketful of rewritten history, eisegeted Scripture, the ‘Paul-was-just-a-homophobic-bigot-or-he-was-talking-about-a-different-kind-of-homosexuality-than-we’re-talking-about’, and the Jesus-loves-everybody-and-doesn’t-care-if-you-don’t-try-to-change-your-sinful-ways’ malarkey has been around at least as long as the crucifixion; in fact, NALT isn’t even really unique in calling itself ‘Christian’ and being pro-homosexuality – after all, you’ve got the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America and the Episcopal Church as two examples of institutionalized anti-Christian dogma.

The biggest thing NALT’s got going for it, at least from a Dan-Savage point of view, is that its members are all going to be on the same page regarding their pro-homosexuality Scripture-bending, which ought to minimize or even nullify the problems the liberal ‘Christian’ denominations I mentioned earlier are having trying to bend their memberships to the pro-homosexuality agenda – there are still plenty of ELCA Lutherans and Episcopalians in the pews who adhere to the truth of Scripture and aren’t going to give one micron up.  This has other benefits for the Savages, in that their members will all show a cohesive front to whomever they try to proselytize, unlike the institutional church, which far too often is presenting a fragmented picture of what they’re supposed to be.

So no, it doesn’t surprise me at all that Dan Savage is teaming up with a group which calls itself ‘Christian’, yet embraces non-Scriptural ideas.  NALT was tailor-made for a guy like him.  I see it rapidly becoming his ‘tip of the spear’ which he’ll try to drive into the ribs of the Christian church.
