“I don’t even know what they mean by what they are saying.”

That was the response by one of the members of Fred Phelps’ church cult of hate when they were confronted by counter-protesters at a Lourde concert in Kansas (I think; I’m going by the call letters of the station, KSHB).  And what was it a response to?

A banner that read, ‘Sorry for your loss’.

This one, here:

In fact:
It did not appear [the Westboro-ites] knew how to react.
Well, of course they didn’t know how to react.

Think about the signs and banners the Westboro church hate-cult  displays when they protest.  Beyond the ‘God hates fags’ ones you see a level of sadistic pleasure on the banners praising the deaths of soldiers and others, don’t you?

They were expecting the counter-protesters to display the same level of sadistic glee at the death of their founder; when they didn’t get it, it confounded them.  They worked themselves up, preparing to be besieged by people they though would be just as hateful as they are … and then stood there, dumbstruck, when those people turned out not to be hateful, themselves.

It reminds me of Romans 12:20:
To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.”
And not to be too flip, but …

I think I smell hair burning.
